If you’re using Magical with a work email address (for example, @company.com), your account is automatically placed into a work workspace. In work workspaces, upgrades are usually managed by a workspace admin—and in some cases, your company may choose not to provide paid seats.
If you’d prefer to pay for Magical yourself, you can do so by creating a personal account. This lets you upgrade independently and manage your own billing.
This guide walks through exactly how to do that.
When does this apply?
This option is right for you if:
Your company isn’t upgrading to a paid plan
Your company requires employees to pay individually
You don’t have permission to upgrade your work workspace
You want a personal, self-managed Magical account
Why you need a personal account
Magical uses your email domain to determine whether an account belongs to a work workspace or a personal one.
Work email (e.g.
@company.com) → Work workspacePersonal email (e.g. Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo) → Personal account
Because of this, upgrading individually requires creating a new account with a personal email address.
Step 1: Create a personal Magical account
Sign up for Magical using a personal email address, such as:
Gmail
Outlook / Hotmail
Yahoo
⚠️ Important: Do not use your work email. Work domains will always be placed into a work workspace.
Step 2: Transfer your templates from your work account
Once your personal account is created, you can move your existing text expansion templates over from your work account.
👉 Follow this guide: How to transfer templates between accounts
This allows you to keep all of your shortcuts, variables, and workflows—no rebuilding required.
Step 3: Upgrade your personal account to the Core Plan
After transferring your templates, you can upgrade your personal account to the Core Plan.
The Core Plan is designed for individuals and includes:
Unlimited text expansion
Monthly or annual billing
Full control over your subscription

What happens to my work account?

Your company workspace is not affected
Your employer will not see or manage your personal account
Billing is handled entirely by you
You can continue using Magical independently on your personal account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use both a work account and a personal account?
Yes. Each account is tied to its own email address and managed separately.
Will my company know I created a personal account?
No. Personal accounts are private and not visible to your employer.
Can I move templates again later if my company upgrades?
Yes. Templates can be transferred again if your situation changes.
Why can’t I just upgrade with my work email?
Work workspaces require admin-level permissions to manage billing. Creating a personal account allows you to upgrade independently.
